Alimak SE industrial lift is predesigned into coal handling prep plant at Wesfarmers' Curragh Mine

Curragh Mine Coal Handling & Preparation Plant, Bowen Basin, Australia

Alimak SE rack and pinion lift is predesigned into the Curragh Mine’s new Coal Handling and Preparation Plant as part of safety and efficiency improvements on site. The SE 2000 was identified as the preferred industrial lift for the project due to its increased size, capacity and versatility.

The Curragh Mine is owned and operated by Wesfarmers and is located in the coal-rich Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. In order to increase the capacity of the mine, Wesfarmers has undertaken a $286 million expansion project to improve mine infrastructure. Included in this expansion is the installation of an additional coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP): a facility used to screen, wash and process coal in preparation for transport to market.

Located 500m from the existing CHPP, the new 1200 tons per hour wash plant will increase the mine’s output of coal. As per Wesfarmers’ specifications, the facility was to include an industrial lift, to be used as the primary means of access to the five levels of the wash plant.

Downer, as EPC contractor for the project, proposed the inclusion of the Alimak SE 2000 rack and pinion lift for ongoing safety and efficiency improvements at the Curragh mine site. As a result, the lift was predesigned into the structure of the new CHPP. The SE 2000 was identified as the preferred lift for the project, as its increased size and capacity would accommodate a greater range of transport uses. Alimak Hek worked closely with Downer, providing a full supply and installation package, including engineering and design support for the lift tie-in points, landings, pit design and electrical supply requirements.

Commissioned in 2011, the SE 2000 industrial lift is used as the primary means of access to the wash facility, providing plant operators with vertical access to the five levels of the CHPP. Used routinely throughout daily operations and in heavy-use periods during plant shutdowns, the SE 2000 transports the equipment and personnel necessary for servicing and maintenance on the plant, reducing the use of cranes on site.
